Liana

Born in Coimbra, Liana moved to Lisbon at an early age and began to sing fado, at just 9 years old, at Coliseu dos Recreios. At the age of 14, she wins the «Grande Noite do Fado 1994» in the youth category and at the age of 16 she wins in the senior one, being the first fado singer to win this event twice.

She had a full childhood, counting 11 first prizes in contests of multiple City Councils and other festivals.

She was the 2000 winner of the Festival RTP da Canção.

Under the direction of Filipe La Féria, she played the main role of the fado singer Amália Rodrigues, when she was young, in the «Musical Amália», for five years, having won the Pateota prize for new actress.

Having recorded 2 works on cassette as a child (1994 and 1996), her first professional album was released in 2004 «Fado.pt», being an experimental work.

In 2005 she edited the album «Sombra» of traditional fado, in an author's edition that began to make her visible abroad.

In 2007 she was invited to join the Portuguese-Swedish world music band Stockholm Lisboa Project, releasing the cd entitled «SOL» in 2007

Still in 2007, he leaves for London with a GDA scholarship and resides there for 3 years becoming manager of the fado restaurant “O Fado”, in Knightsbridge, where she produces several cultural events related to Portuguese culture, winning the Entrepreneurship award for UK News newspaper. She also teaches the history of fado and how to sing it in workshops for foreigners, even being invited to teach at the University of Cork (Ireland).

In 2008 she sings in Portuguese and Arabic in “From Palestine to Portugal” with the prestigious singer Reem Kelani, in a project sponsored by the Musicport Festival and by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

In 2009, she released her second album with Stockholm Lisboa Project – “Diagonal” – a record that received the best reviews in world music magazines, the award for best record of 2009 by the German critic “Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritic” and a nomination in the “Songlines Music” Awards” 2010 in the UK.

Liana has performed in Australia, United States of America, Canada, Brazil, China, Middle East (Lebanon, Dubai and Bahrain), as well as in several European countries (Spain, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Sweden, England, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Romania, Austria).

She returns to Portugal in 2010 and is invited by Filipe La Féria to play the characters of Severa and Hermínia Silva in the musical “Fado História de um Povo” at Casino Estoril.

In 2011 Liana makes a showcase at the biggest International Music Fair Womex – in Copenhagen.

She is a frequent guest of England's Grand Union Orchestra, singing themes originally composed for her by director Tony Haines.

In 2013 she records her third solo album (fifth with her first teenage works). “Embalo” is released in March 2014.

Liana is also the coordinator of the Sing Fado project, a workshop for Portuguese and foreigners that approaches Fado in its historical and musical aspect.

In May 2020, Liana released the album “Mãe”, as a tribute and with an inherent social concern. Remarkably popular and traditional, this record has five poems and a melody by the fado singer, as well as originals by great names in Portuguese music. “Que força é esta”, by Sérgio Godinho, ends the album.
